It is not always easy to choose the right snowshoes that reflect our:

  • Experience and style
  • Desires
  • Level
  • Physical build.

So in order to give you the very best advice we asked Didier Leblanc, a mid-mountain guide, to give us his tips for choosing the right snowshoes!

To practice snowshoeing in the French mountains, you need:

  • A light but hard-wearing snowshoe
  • Good structure under the decking to ensure good grip on both uphill and downhill slopes
  •  Teeth on the front of the foot for bite on uphill slopes
  •  Heel lifters can help to relieve calves
  •  Spikes underneath the structure provide stability on frozen trails

When choosing your snowshoes the important things to consider are:

  • Your size
  • Your weight
  • Your shoe size
  • Your usage and experience (occasional? regular? expert?)
  • The terrain (powder? compacted snow?)

Foot support on the snowshoe by means of size adjustment and a good fastening is essential.

Our size recommendations are available on each snowshoe product sheet ("size guide" tab). The size of the snowshoes depends on your weight and shoe size and also on whether you are using your snowshoes on compact and/or shallow snow!

If you’re hesitating between 2 sizes :

  • If you like to make your own tracks in fresh snow and regularly travel with a heavy backpack, then opt for a large size. You will have better spread, which limits sinking into the snow and fatigue.
  • On the other hand, if you like to follow the marked trails, the smaller decking is more comfortable and less cumbersome.

If your usage is in alpine environments(steep slopes and requires good grip on these slopes) you might consider choosing Grip snowshoes.

AND THEN COMES THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT: HAVE FUN WITH YOUR SNOWSHOES AND ENJOY THE SNOW!
